KANPUR, India (AP) — The first day of the second test between India and Bangladesh was disrupted by rain, with Bangladesh finishing at 107 for 3 when play was halted on Friday.
Limited Overs Played
Only 35 overs were bowled during the day due to inclement weather. Bangladesh began the second session at 74 for 2 but had to wait an additional 15 minutes to resume play because of a light shower. Unfortunately, only 45 minutes of action was possible before poor light halted play, followed by a heavy downpour that prevented any further cricket.
Key Performances
Ravichandran Ashwin played a crucial role by breaking the third-wicket partnership during the abbreviated second session, dismissing skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto for 31 runs. Initially appealed for a catch at short leg, the review led to a leg-before-wicket decision against Shanto, who faced 57 balls and struck six fours.
At stumps, Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 40, while Mushfiqur Rahim contributed 6 runs in a partnership of 27 runs off 37 balls.
Conditions and Strategy
India chose to field first under overcast conditions, marking the first time the team has opted to do so in a home test since 2015. Pace bowler Akash Deep made an early impact, taking 2 wickets for 14 runs in the first session after an hour-long delay due to a wet outfield.
Bangladesh started cautiously, with Jasprit Bumrah maintaining a tight line in his opening spell. Opener Zakir Hassan struggled to find his rhythm, facing 24 balls without scoring before being caught at gully off Deep’s bowling. Yashasvi Jaiswal took a spectacular low catch. Deep later dismissed Shadman Islam lbw for 24 runs.
Series Context
India leads the two-match series after winning the first test in Chennai by 280 runs.
