Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to commemorate the 116th anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s iconic poem, ‘Sagara Pran Talamala’, officials said.
Preliminary Itinerary
Officials have indicated that Mr. Shah will arrive at Veer Savarkar International Airport, though the final schedule is yet to be confirmed.
Police sources noted that he is expected to attend a statue unveiling ceremony of Savarkar at Beodnabad in South Andaman, along with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.
Public Engagements and Inaugurations
During his visit, Mr. Shah is likely to address a public gathering at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DBRAIT) in Sri Vijaya Puram, where a song dedicated to Savarkar will be officially released.
He is also expected to inaugurate a newly constructed forensic science laboratory in Sri Vijaya Puram. A senior police officer confirmed that all information received from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is preliminary, and the final itinerary will be shared soon.
Historical Significance
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was imprisoned in the Cellular Jail (Kala Pani) in Port Blair, now known as Sri Vijaya Puram. During his incarceration, he endured solitary confinement and hard labor, symbolizing the struggle against British colonial rule.
Previous Visit
This will be Mr. Shah’s second visit to the archipelago. He had previously visited to commemorate the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and participated as the chief guest at the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Iconic Events Week’ in Sri Vijaya Puram.
