Assam and Gujarat are increasing efforts to find and deport people they believe are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
Gujarat Identifies Over 250 Suspected Immigrants
In Ahmedabad, police say they have found over 250 Bangladeshi nationals living in the city without legal documents. Authorities plan to deport these individuals as part of a wider immigration crackdown.
Assam Deports Hundreds in Recent Weeks
In Assam, officials say they have already deported 303 people to Bangladesh since May 2025. These deportees are part of a larger group of 30,000 people declared as foreigners by state tribunals over several years.
The move is popular with many locals. In Assam, some believe immigrants are taking jobs and resources meant for Assamese-speaking citizens.
Residents With Deep Roots Also Affected
Many people now facing deportation have lived in Assam for decades. They have homes, land, and families in the state. Despite this, some are still being told they are foreigners.
Rights Groups Raise Concerns
Lawyers and human rights groups say many of these people are wrongly classified. They warn the process often lacks proper checks.
“These are long-term residents,” said a local lawyer. “They should not be treated as outsiders without proof.”
Activists believe the situation may cause serious human rights violations. Some could be left stateless if deported.
