Sunny Deol’s War Drama Opens Strong
Border 2, the highly anticipated war drama starring Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, and Diljit Dosanjh, had a powerful opening at the box office on Friday. Riding on record-breaking advance bookings, the film saw packed theatres across India, outperforming Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar, which was last year’s big hit.
Impressive Day 1 Collections
According to early estimates, Border 2 earned ₹30 crore net on its opening day, surpassing Dhurandhar’s ₹27 crore day-one collection. Pre-sale numbers were equally strong, with the film raking in ₹12.5 crore gross and selling over 4 lakh tickets nationwide.
As a spiritual sequel to J.P. Dutta’s 1997 classic Border, the film was positioned as Bollywood’s first major release of 2026, and it has delivered on that promise. Analysts predict a ₹100+ crore opening weekend, putting it on track to challenge several top-grossing films from last year.
While Border 2 couldn’t surpass Sunny Deol’s all-time day-one record of ₹40.10 crore set by Gadar 2 (2023) or Chhaava’s ₹32 crore, it still emerged as a strong contender in the box office race.
Critical Reception
The Hindustan Times review praised the film:
“Border 2 is not just another sequel. It makes you sit up and salute. Despite its excesses, its sincerity shines through. The film brings back a time when patriotism in cinema was displayed unapologetically, with heroes who spoke boldly and emotions that rang true. With genuinely moving moments, Border 2 delivers a powerful theatrical experience.”
Cast and Production
Border 2 stars Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty in lead roles. The ensemble cast includes Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, and Anya Singh in pivotal roles.
The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, J.P. Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta and is directed as a grand cinematic experience aimed at fans of patriotic and action-packed war dramas.
