Ferry Services Could Have Reduced Travel Chaos During Kumbh Mela, Say Bihar Ex-Servicemen

Following the tragic stampede at New Delhi railway station, Bihar’s ex-servicemen have suggested that ferry services could have significantly eased congestion on roads and railways during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Need for Stronger Waterway Services

Col V.K. Singh, President of the Bihar Ex-Servicemen Association-Officers, highlighted the transportation challenges faced by millions of devotees. “Buses and trains are overcrowded, leaving pilgrims stranded or facing long delays. The Ganga River could have been used for smoother travel, especially from key transit points like Buxar, Patna, and Sonepur. However, no real effort was made to improve ferry services,” he stated.

Lack of Planning in Disaster Management

Ex-servicemen, who have extensive experience in disaster response, criticized the lack of proper coordination and planning. “We have seen better disaster management in conflict zones. The authorities failed to anticipate the massive rush, which could have prevented the stampede at New Delhi railway station,” Singh added.

Environmental Concerns at Kumbh Mela

Apart from transportation issues, ex-servicemen also raised concerns about pollution in the Ganga. “Many devotees were seen bathing in the river while still clothed, contributing to water contamination. Despite repeated warnings from environmental groups, no strict measures were implemented to protect the holy river,” Singh emphasized.

Call for Improved Infrastructure

Experts are urging authorities to enhance transportation and environmental policies for future religious gatherings. Expanding ferry services could provide a safe, efficient, and eco-friendly alternative for pilgrims, reducing stress on the existing road and railway networks.
