A 34-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh tragically passed away due to a blood transfusion error at Kakinada Government General Hospital (GGH). The incident has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about medical negligence at the hospital.
Blood Transfusion Error Claims Life of Kidney Patient
Bhavana Sirisha, a resident of Palakollu in West Godavari district, was admitted to Kakinada GGH on November 4 for advanced treatment of kidney disease, a condition she had battled for four years. Doctors recommended a blood transfusion to address her low haemoglobin levels, specifying ‘O positive’ as the required blood type.
However, on the evening of November 26, a house surgeon mistakenly transfused ‘AB positive’ blood instead of ‘O positive.’ Family members noticed the error and immediately questioned the surgeon, who allegedly dismissed their concerns. A postgraduate doctor later intervened, stopping the transfusion and replacing the blood with the correct type. Unfortunately, the wrong blood had already been administered, leading to severe complications.
Woman’s Condition Worsens After Mistake
Despite efforts to stabilize her, Sirisha’s health deteriorated rapidly. Doctors attempted to improve her oxygen levels, but she succumbed to the complications early on November 27.
Hospital Promises Investigation
Dr. Lavanya Kumari, the hospital superintendent, expressed condolences to the grieving family and assured a thorough investigation into the incident. The case has been escalated to the state health minister for further action.
Family Demands Accountability
Sirisha’s mother, Devadatla Peddintla, has called for justice, demanding answers for the fatal lapse. While the government provided a compensation of ₹3 lakh to the family, they stressed that no monetary support could replace the loss of their loved one. The tragedy has reignited debates about hospital safety and accountability in the healthcare system.
